Prints
These prints are based on an emotional journey in 2024 of relocating to the coast from a London suburb. Leaving the home of twenty-six years that we shared with our children. Leaving family and friends behind. Something that seemed so easy, became a sort of panic. From the first excitement to a sense of fear and to the feeling ‘where are we?’ Strange home, strange place….it was such an odd feeling.
The sea was the only element that seemed comforting. Daily walks, watching the sun setting became cathartic. Hence the seascapes to describe the emotional journey.
Artist’s Statement
Marie’s work explores spaces, objects, and figuration; the intimacies of her life – the emotional connection to those closest to her. The traces of experience and the residue off what’s left behind in memories.
She balances the use the landscape, spaces and figuration as a metaphor for comfort and security, memories often shifting between memory or the feeling you may have just woken up from a dream.
Colour is a predominant element in her paintings, prints and drawings. The depiction of light and space is a vital aspect of the work. Intuitive choices of colour, composition and printed elements has the capacity to express emotion. Shadows are created, the figures appear ephemeral, some real and imagined.
Initially using drawing and photography to gather ‘moments’ in her life to build and inform the work.Illusionary forms are created through thin layers of colour, pattern, and texture, rubbing back, revealing and reworking. The play between an unrealisable multi-layered truth.
